Desa Les

Tucked away on the northeastern coast of Bali lies Desa Les, a tranquil seaside village in the Tejakula district of Buleleng Regency. Far from the island’s popular tourist hubs, Desa Les remains largely untouched by mass tourism — making it an ideal destination for travelers in search of authenticity, serenity, and natural beauty.

A Village Between Mountains and the Sea

Desa Les is surrounded by lush green hills on one side and the sparkling Bali Sea on the other. The combination of volcanic soil and mountain-fed springs has made the area incredibly fertile, supporting both agriculture and traditional livelihoods such as fishing and salt-making.

Unlike the busy beaches of the south, the coastline in Les is calm and quiet. It features a rocky beach lined with traditional fishing boats (jukung) and is especially peaceful at sunrise. The village atmosphere is warm and welcoming, offering a glimpse into daily Balinese life where tradition still shapes the rhythm of the day.

Home of Coral Conservation

One of the most remarkable aspects of Desa Les is its community-led coral reef restoration project. In the past, the coral reefs along the coast were severely damaged by destructive fishing practices, such as cyanide and blast fishing. But thanks to the initiative of local villagers, environmental organizations, and international partners, the reefs are slowly being brought back to life.

The project is known as Reef Gardeners of Les Village, and it involves trained local divers—mostly young fishermen—who maintain artificial reef structures and transplant coral fragments to regenerate the underwater ecosystem. Tourists are welcome to learn about the project and even snorkel or dive to see the coral gardens firsthand.

This eco-tourism approach not only helps the environment but also provides sustainable income for the community, blending conservation with cultural pride.

Cultural and Spiritual Experiences

Beyond its environmental efforts, Desa Les is rich in culture. Traditional ceremonies are still actively practiced, and visitors may witness temple processions, dance performances, or local offerings being placed at household shrines. The Pura Dalem Les is the village’s main temple and serves as the center of many spiritual activities.

The village is also known for its natural spring waterfall, called Yeh Mampeh Waterfall, one of the tallest in Bali. Located a short hike from the village center, the waterfall cascades into a cool natural pool surrounded by tropical forest. It’s an ideal spot for a refreshing swim or a quiet moment in nature.

A Hidden Gem Worth Visiting

Desa Les may not appear in most guidebooks, but that’s part of its charm. Whether you're interested in marine conservation, looking to immerse yourself in authentic Balinese village life, or simply craving a peaceful escape, Les offers a unique and meaningful experience.

Accommodations in the area are mostly homestays and eco-lodges, run by local families who are more than happy to share their stories, food, and culture. The pace of life is slower here—but in the best way possible.

If you're ready to explore a different side of Bali—one that’s honest, humble, and deeply connected to nature—then Desa Les might just be the place you’re looking for.
