One of the largest and oldest temples in Bali which is thought to have existed since the time of Pre-Hindu Buddhism. Lempuyang Temple is also the palace of Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa in his manifestation as Sang Hyang Geni Jaya or the god ISwara and occupies the east wind.

The History of Lempuyang Luhur Temple

The name Lempuyang comes from the words "Lampu" which means light and "hyang" which means a term for God, so it means God's bright holy light, because it is located on the east side of the island of Bali which is located east of the island of Bali. According to Pura Sad Kahyangan in Bali, the eastern position is Dewa Iswara with Bajra weapons, a white symbol in the form of light to provide illumination.

The history of the existence of Lempuyang Luhur Temple as quoted in the Kutara Kanda papyrus Dewa Purana Bangsul is mentioned; that Sang Hyang Parameswara or Sang Hyang Pasupati brought a piece of Mount Mahameru from Jambhu Dwipa (India), then the peak of Mount Mahameru was divided into 3 large parts and also other small parts, the three large peaks became Mount Agung, the middle part became Mount Batur and Mount Rinjani in Lombok. Then one small part of Mount Mahameru became Mount Lempuyang.

In the lontar it is also stated that Sang Hyang Parameswara assigned his son, Sang Hyang Agni Jaya Sakti, to go to Bali with the aim of maintaining the welfare of Bali, then Sang Hyang Agni Jaya Sakti remained at Pura Luhur Lempuyang, along with other gods. So Pura Luhur Lempuyang is a place of worship for all Hindus in Bali regardless of caste, skin color or descent, as long as they are Hindus.
