Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile Lombok

29/08/2025 23:39

Hidden deep in the lush foothills of Mount Rinjani, two of Lombok’s most enchanting waterfalls await discovery: Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. Located near the quiet village of Senaru, these twin waterfalls are surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, towering trees, and the soothing sounds of flowing water — offering an unforgettable escape into nature’s serenity.

Sendang Gile: The Gentle Introduction

The first waterfall you’ll encounter after a short trek down a staircase is Sendang Gile. Cascading gracefully down a 30-meter cliff into a shallow pool, this waterfall is peaceful, refreshing, and ideal for travelers of all ages. The area around the falls is shaded and cool, making it a perfect spot to relax, dip your feet, or snap a few photos.

Local legend says that the waterfall was discovered when a lion ("gile" in local Sasak dialect) went wild in the forest and villagers chased it to this very spot — hence the name "Sendang Gile."

Tiu Kelep: The Wild and Mystical One

From Sendang Gile, an adventurous 30–45-minute walk through the forest and across shallow rivers leads you to the second and more dramatic waterfall — Tiu Kelep. The name means "flying water" in the Sasak language, and it fits perfectly: the water here crashes down from a great height, surrounded by green moss-covered cliffs and mist that fills the air.

Tiu Kelep is not just visually stunning — it’s also powerful and energizing. The pool beneath the falls is deeper and colder, perfect for a refreshing swim if you're feeling brave. The sound of the water echoing through the canyon adds a mystical feel to the experience.

The Trek: Nature at Every Step

The journey between the two waterfalls is part of the adventure. You’ll walk through tunnels, cross streams barefoot, and pass under a canopy of thick jungle trees. The air is fresh and rich with the scent of wet earth and forest — a welcome contrast from the dry coastal areas of Lombok.

While the trek is not overly difficult, it’s best to wear proper footwear and consider hiring a local guide, especially if you're visiting during or after the rainy season, when the trails can be slippery.

Cultural and Spiritual Importance

Both waterfalls hold spiritual significance for the local Sasak people, and the surrounding forest is considered sacred. Some locals believe that bathing in the waters of Tiu Kelep can bring youth and good health — a belief that adds a layer of meaning to the already magical setting.

Why These Waterfalls Belong on Your Lombok Itinerary

Whether you're an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or simply someone looking for peace and beauty, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep offer a perfect blend of tranquility and excitement. Their natural charm, combined with the lush setting of northern Lombok, makes them a must-visit destination. Come for the waterfalls — but leave with a deeper appreciation of Lombok’s hidden treasures.
